Portland U14s sealed their first ever league title with a battling 5-1 win against Lilliput Tornados. Nozecco corks were flying at the final whistle as the Blues enjoyed a deserved celebration, the culmination of a truly emphatic league campaign with the Blues storming to the title with two games to spare.
The Islanders knew that a win was all that stood in their way to becoming league champions, but clearly Lilliput hadn’t read the script as they took the lead in the 7th minute. Portland were only temporarily rocked by going behind, and soon began to fashion chances of their own as they started to dominate possession. A series of corners from Ollie started to pile on the pressure for the visitors, with one striking the upright. It was Ollie who found the equaliser with a long-range effort that squirmed out of the grasp of the Lilliput keeper. The Blues then took the lead following a Saxon through-ball to Lucas who showed an ice-cool nerve to steer it past the onrushing keeper. Eddie then gave the Islanders breathing space as his bouncing effort managed to find the back of the net for 3-1.
Second half and Portland continued to dominate. Kalen continued his impressive form, winning a penalty that Rhys dispatched to make it 4-1. Rhys saw a few more chances fall his way with Jack M beginning to find space and delivering some incisive through-balls. The final goal of the piece was perhaps the goal of the game. A terrific performance from Lucas was capped when he found some space in the Lilliput box and squared to Kalen who then fired an arrow of an effort high past the Lilliput stopper to round off the scoring at 5-1.
Another maximum match day squad of 16 gave the Blues terrific options from the bench. It’s been this squad depth that’s undoubtedly led to such a successful league campaign this term, as well as the consistent performance levels of a settled defence that’s been such a bedrock of the Blues’ performances in 24/25.
Next week it’s back to league cup action as Portland welcome Dexters Panthers to the Grove as they contest for a spot in the last four.
